Regarding the "Chunk of happiness" section, it's SO odd...I was just explaining this to my son today (he's 15). I was trying to explain it to him within the context that this is what happens when adolescents enter adulthood, that they hand over full control of at least a portion of their own happiness to someone outside their immediate family, and that alters the dynamic of the family in ways that never really return to the baseline. I was just trying to forewarn him and give him the mental wherewithal to see and understand that this is a good and necessary thing as he goes from 15 to 25, as long as he understands it for what it is and can recognize it.

Suffice to say you've explained it far better than I ever could, and I'll ask him to read this ASAP.
